You may remember the incredible story of our 2025 Joint Ambassador, Kerry-Lee Gockel – the inspirational open-water swimmer born without arms who joined us for our 30th swim.

Well, this is the (funny) story of Albert, her support swimmer!

Albert and his brother Bernard knew Kerry-Lee as a child, and when she asked if they’d be part of her support crew, Albert jumped at the chance. His role? Swim alongside Kerry-Lee to provide any assistance she might need, like adjusting her goggles, and make sure she swam straight.

“I knew I was qualified for the job,” Albert said. “I’ve completed the Jetty Swim solo about 20 times, so I know the way!

“I’m usually in the water three times a week with my swimming group, the Yallingup Fat Turkeys, and Kerry-Lee’s swim speed is around 20 minutes per km  which is a cruisy speed for me. Under normal conditions.”

However, the 2025 swim conditions tested everyone, with strong winds creating some challenging waves, which meant Albert had to adjust his swim strategy.

“Heading out all went to plan, but once we rounded the jetty, the wind picked up and we had a fair bit of chop to get through which are certainly not my favourite conditions.

“I was feeling pretty puffed but the headwind didn’t slow Kerry-Lee a jot – she ploughed through like a semi-submersible! So instead of being her port-side guide, I ended up tucking in behind Kerry-Lee to draft and allowed the wingless warrior to drag me home.” 💪

Albert said that while his role as support swimmer didn’t go exactly to plan, it hasn’t deterred him from entering this year’s ballot:

“Busselton Jetty Swim really is the greatest open water swim on earth, and if I secure a spot, 2026 will be my 21st Swim

“I usually try to match my time to my age… so this year I’m hoping to swim the 3.6km Solo Swim in under 78 minutes.”

Not bad, Albert. Not bad at all!
